Abstract

A permanent set is imparted to animal fibre fabrics by continuously advancing the fabric in open width, impregnating with an aqueous solution having a pH of 9-12, maintaining the fabric under warpwise and weftwise tension in a flat condition, generating steam in the interior of the travelling tensioned and flat fabric for 14 to 21 seconds and discontinuing the generation of steam while the fabric contains more than 20 per cent of its weight of the impregnating liquid. Steam is generated by subjecting the wet fabric to high intensity infrared radiation. The process is applicable to fabrics of wool, mohair, alpaca and mixtures thereof with artificial fibres such as nylon, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate Vicara, "Dacron" and "Orlon" (Registered Trade Marks). Specified aqueous solutions are those of sodium hydroxide containing disodium phosphate or boric acid or of a water-soluble amine.
