Abstract

869,296. Steering vehicles. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 24501/57. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] In a suspension means for a steerable wheel, an upper telescopic cushioning element 9 is connected to a chassis frame member 14 and the lower telescopic element 1 carrying the stub axle 6 is connected to the steering mechanism and is steerable relative to the upper element 9. The element 9 is flexibly connected to the frame member 14 by rubber blocks 21, 22 clamped on opposite faces of the member 14 between a flange 25 and a threaded nut 26 on a tube 24. The lower element 1 is connected by a ball joint 7 at its lower end to a suspension link 8 and is steered through splines 12 on a shaft 13 which passes through the tube 24 and slidably engages a piston end wall 11 containing the damper mechanism. The shaft 13 is coupled to the steering linkage through an arm 19. A lower compartment 4 of the element 1 is divided by a free piston 3 beneath which gas under pressure provides the cushioning means.
