Abstract
867,393. Valves. SPERRYN & CO. Ltd. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958; Jan. 3, 1959], Nos. 41255/58 and 309/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXV] The armature 10 of a plunger-type electromagnet, e.g. in a gas valve, has a " head 11 at each end, of plastic having a low coefficient of friction, e.g. P.T.F.E. The heads may be secured by an adhesive, or by tight-fitting spigots, and one, 15, may be conical to form the closure member of the valve. The heads only contact the bore to lower the frictional resistance and it is stated that, when operated on A.C., vibration and consequent noise is reduced. The electromagnetically controlled valve shown has two windings, one, 19, switch controlled to close the valve and the other, 20, permanently energized to open it when 19 is switched off. Opening of the valve admits gas from a passage 17 to a pilot jet 18. The armature may be of circular, hexagonal or octagonal cross-section and the heads may or may not correspond.
