Abstract

Polyvinyl acetal sulpho-acids are prepared by reacting in aqueous media an unsaturated aldehyde and sulphurous acid with a polymer or copolymer containing the vinyl alcohol group. Specified alcohols are polyvinyl alcohols which may contain 2-98 per cent of the originally existing acyl groups of the ester, and copolymers of vinyl esters, e.g. acetate, propionate and benzoate with acrylic esters, methacrylic esters, vinyl chloride, crotonic acid, maleic acid ester or fumaric acid ester which have then been hydrolysed. Specified unsaturated esters are acrolein, crotonaldehyde, a - methacrolein, chlorocrotonaldehyde, sorbaldehyde and ethylhexenal. Saturated aldehydes, e.g. acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, heptylaldehyde, octylaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and naphthylaldehyde may also be present. The sulphurous acid is supplied by passing gaseous sulphur dioxide into the aqueous media. The products may be used as anti-static preparation agents, sizing agents, adhesives, protective colloids, and thickening agents.
