Abstract
761,741. Rolling and wrapping newspapers and periodicals. KERR, G. A. Nov. 26, 1954 [Dec. 16, 1953], No. 34291/54. Class 94(1). A machine for rolling and wrapping newspapers or periodicals comprises two opposed forked members rotatable about a common axis and movable axially towards each other so as to embrace the side edges of the newspaper and roll it within a cylindrical space defined by two sets of resiliently-mounted rollers, the members being withdrawn when the rolling is complete and the sets of rollers moved apart to discharge the rolled newspapers. Each forked member 53. 54, Fig. 6, is secured to a rod 55 which is slidable between rollers journalled in brackets secured to a sleeve journalled in a fixed housing 56, the sleeve being rotated by a sprocket 59 and chain (not shown). The ends of the rods 55 are coupled to levers 69, 70, Fig. 1, operated through push-rods 67, 68 by a cam 13 on a shaft driven by a sprocket 12, the levers also actuating links 71, 72 coupled to mechanism, see Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), which varies the slack in the chains driving the sprockets 59 so that the rotation of the forked members' is temporarily arrested as they move inwardly to enable them to embrace the newspaper. The sets of rollers 19, Fig. 2, are mounted on brackets 17 and 18 which are pivoted to supporting links 21, 20 and arranged to be swung to an open position against the action of a spring by links and bellcrank levers 25, 27 and 24, 26 operated through rods 28, 29 by a weighted lever 30 carrying a roller 31 engaging a cam 14 on the shaft of the cam 13. An extension 35 of the lever 27 is coupled to a rod 36 which controls the engagement of newspaper-feeding and holding rollers 40, 38 with driven rollers 42, 43. As a newspaper is fed over a table 50 it engages an abutment 49 on a lever 48 and unlocks a spring-loaded trip lever 47 which moves a stop 44 to an inoperative position so that the roller 40 is moved downwardly when the control rod 36 is moved upwardly by.the lever 27 as the sets of rollers 19 are.moved apart by operation of the lever 30 to discharge a previously-wrapped newspaper. The rollers 40, 42 feed the newspaper forwardly until its front end lies between the rollers 38, 43, whereafter the cam 14 actuates the lever 30 to close the sets of rollers 19 and operate the control rod 36 to cause the rollers 38, 43 to engage and feed the newspaper down a shoot 51 into the space between the rollers 19. The forked members are then moved inwardly to roll the newspaper. After about one turn has been completed, a gummed wrapper is fed from a roll 52 by mechanism driven through a onerevolution clutch 16 controlled by the lever 47 and is rolled around the newspaper.
