Abstract
760,780. Free piston compressors. PETERSEN, H. July 30, 1954, No. 22376/54. Class 7 (2). In a combined internal combustion engine and air compressor assembly of the kind having two axially parallel cylinders and floating opposed free pistons each one of a pair of opposed pistons operating in one cylinder being connected to a free piston of a pair of opposed pistons operating in the other cylinder by means of connecting rods and an oscillatably mounted double armed rocking lever, the rocking levers are linked by a coupling oscillatably mounted at each end on at least one bearing and the corresponding bearings at each end of the coupling are fixed or connected to the adjacent levers eccentrically of the pivots for the latter and at the same fixed distance from the respective centres of the pivots. In Fig. 1 opposed pistons 1, 2 and 3, 4 are synchronized by a connecting rod 15 and and eccentrics 13, 14 attached respectively to the rocking levers 8, 9. In a modification a connecting rod is attached at its opposite ends to eccentric points on the respective rocking levers. The connecting rod may be in two parts bolted together with shims between them. In Fig. 4 the pistons are synchronized by connecting rods 24, 25 and levers 22, 23, 27. In a modification of Fig. 4 the levers 22, 23 are so arranged that the movements of the bearings 28, 29 only extend above the line passing through the centres of the rocking levers 10, 11 and the extended position of the levers 22, 23 and rods 24, 25 is not exceeded. In Fig. 6 two pivoted levers 38, 39 are employed. Fig. 7 shows a modification with interengaging toothed segments 57, 61. It is stated that mass forces set up are balanced and vibration is eliminated.
