Abstract

472,591. Balancing reciprocating engines. ZEISSL, I. April 13, 1937, No. 10509. Convention date, June 20, 1936. [Class 122 (iii)] Comprises means for balancing engines having oppositely-arranged cylinders, a balance weight on the shaft, and a transversely-moving balancing-mass. The balancing-mass or piston 9 is caused to remain substantially stationary when the crank passes through a position generally transverse thereto. The. oppositelyreciprocating piston 1, 2 in the cylinders 3, 4 of an internal-combustion engine are connected by rods 5, 6 with the crank-shaft 7 upon which is mounted a balance weight 13. A balancing, scavenging-piston 9 is driven through an eye 12 on the connecting-rod 5 and pin-and-slot mechanism 10, 11. The product of the mass of the piston 9 and its stroke is equal to the mass of the pistons 1, 2 and their stroke. In a modification, Fig. 2, the piston 9 is connected to the eye by links 14, 15, 16 which eliminate the transverse action of the crank on the motion of the piston 9. In a third construction, the rods 5, 6 are connected by links to a doublearmed lever pivoted on the rod of piston 9.
