Abstract
742,724. Thermal switches; switches, partly magnetic. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 24, 1954 [Feb. 26, 1953], No. 5348/53. Class 38(5) A thermostat comprises a pair of bimetal strips 13, 14 mounted on arms 11, 12 of a member 7 having a pair of spaced ears 8 through which a spindle 10 passes to pivotally mount the member 7 on a casing projection 5. The strips 13, 14 have their high expansion sides facing each other, the strip 13 co-operating with a snail cam 16 for adjustment of the operating temperature, and the strip 14 carrying an armature 22 co-operating with a magnet 27. An offset extension 24 of the armature carries an insulating strip 25 co-operating with a stud 43 on an arm 38 supporting a contact 37. The arm 38 is supported by a resilient strip 40 whereby the contact 37 is biased towards a fixed contact 32. On rise of temperature the strips 13,14 deflect away from each other, the strip 13 engaging the cam 16 whereby its deflection is transmitted through the pivoted member 7 to the strip 14 and augments the deflecting force of the latter. Eventually, the armature 22 leaves the magnet 27 and the strip 25 strikes the stud 43 and the contacts 32, 37 are opened. In a modification in which the contacts are opened in response to a fall in temperature, the low expansion sides of the strips 13, 14 face each other. The thermostat may be used in conjunction with the air heater disclosed in Specification 730,299, [Group XI].
