Abstract

730,723. Ventilating vehicles. WEATHER-SHIELDS, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1953 [Sept. 19, 1952; March 30, 1953], Nos. 23536/52 and 8668/53. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] In a heating and ventilating system for public service vehicles having water-cooled engines, e.g. motor coaches, at least one hollow duct 10 extends along the vehicle and contains a gilled or finned tube 23 through which hot water from the cooling system circulates, air from outside the vehicle passing at a controlled rate into the front end of the duct, e.g. from a ventilator 21 on the roof and a fan or blower 20, and discharging through outlets 25 along the duct. The air intake is controlled by a damper 22 or by varying the speed of the fan motor. The diameter of the hot water pipe 23 and its fins 24 is equal to the depth of the air duct 10 which is of flat, rectangular section and, as shown, the pipe extends diagonally across the length of the duct, the air outlets 25 being on the opposite side of the pipe to which the air is fed. The outlets 25 increase in number towards the rear of the duct. There may be two air ducts mounted on the underside of the roof, e.g. to form part of the luggage rack, or below the seats. The hot water pipes 23 are then connected in series so that the water flows from the cooling system in one pipe and back through in the other. In warm weather, the hot-water supply is shut off but air is still passed into the vehicle from the duct or ducts. Extractor ventilators are mounted at the rear end of the roof.
