Class 44 A door latch e.g. for a motor vehicle comprises a mounting plate 10, Figs. 1 and 3, having a flange 11, a rotary toothed latch 12 mounted on the outside of the plate 10 to co-operate with a keeper 61, Fig. 6, a control wheel 14 on the latch spindle 13 on the inside of the plate, a detent 16 pivoted at 15 to the plate 10 and having an arm 17 co-operating with the wheel 14, a release lever 20, also pivoted at 15 and displaceable by outside operating means (e.g. a pushbutton 22) towards the flange 11, a lug 18a on another arm 18 of the detent engaging the lever 20 so that the detent is released as the lever is displaced, an arm 19 projecting towards the flange 11 and a pivoted member 27 mounted on the flange 11 actuated by inside means and carrying an arm 29 adapted when moved in one direction to block movement of the lever 20 by co-operation with the nose 25 thereon and, when moved in the opposite direction to bear down on the detent arm 19 to release the latch. The downwardly extending arm 28 of the member 27 is connected by a link 32 to a lever 34 controlled by an inside handle and retained in either the blocking or neutral positions by a spring arm 37 engageable in either of a pair of notches 38a, 38 respectively. Another arm 30 on the member 27 is adapted, when the arm 29 is in the blocking position to be disposed under the detent arm 19 so that if the door is shut with the member 27 in the blocking position it will be returned to the neutral position. In the form of Fig. 4 the blocking arm 45 is carried on a member 44 actuable from the inside by a rod 52 and from the outside by a key lock 48 controlling an arm 47, a flange 47a of which engages between limbs 46a, 46b of a bifurcated arm 46. The member 44 is held in either position by an over centre spring 51. The detent is released from the inside by a lever 43 having an arm co-operating with the detent arm 19 as before. The member 44 is returned to the unblocking position on movement of the detent by coaction between the detent arm 19 and an arm 55. In another form a member similar to that shown by 27 in Fig. 3 is provided with outside key operating means in addition to the inside operating means. When the latch is to be used on a door other than the master door the lower arm 30 or 55 of the blocking member is omitted so that the blocking member is not returned to the neutral position by slamming the door Another construction is described adapted for use with a door in which the outside key lock and operating means are closely associated e.g. the lock is mounted in the body of a push button adapted to operate the latch mechanism.
