Abstract
662,190. Swash-plate mechanism. SPARMANN, E. E. K. June 8, 1949 [June 8, 1948], No. 15288/49. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] In a swash-plate mechanism for internalcombustion engines, compressors, or pumps pairs of pistons 52, 55, Fig. 1, are coupled through connecting rods 51, 53 to a non-rotatable swash-plate member 3 which is carried on an inclined crank 22 of a shaft 11. The big-end of rod 51 is mounted both rotatably and laterally slidable on a cylindrical element 40 which is itself rotatable on a radial journal pin 4 of the plate 3, clearance holes 59 being provided in the big-end to allow the required freedom of movement with respect to the pin 4 and a nut 45 securing the element 40 on the pin 4. The connecting rod 53 is coupled by a pin 57 to brackets 58 on the big-end of rod 51 so that a knee-action movement in a radial plane of the swash-plate is provided whilst the lateral sliding of the big-end on element 40 allows for the necessary lemniscate movement of the plate which is provided by a suitable anchoring arrangement such as described in Specifications 618,553 and 633,088. In a modified arrangement both connecting rods are coupled by pins to brackets on a central bearing sleeve which is laterally slidable on the element 40 but not rotatable thereon. In another modification, Fig. 9, the big-end of rod 51 is both rotatable and laterally slidable on an element 40 which is rotatable on a journal pin 4 disposed tangentially on the plate 3. In this case the knee-action movement in a tangential plane takes care of the lemniscate movement of the plate whilst the lateral sliding of the big-end on element 40 allows for the varying radial distance of the journal pin 4.
