Abstract
<PICT:0669968/III/1> Carbon black is produced by blasting into one end of an elongated cylindrical reaction chamber a combustible mixture of a fluid hydrocarbon fuel and air in a direction substantially tangential to the chamber wall, burning the mixture to form a turbulent swirling stream of blast flame gases passing longitudinally through the chamber at a temperature in excess of that at which hydrocarbons are decomposed to form carbon black, separately injecting a stream of hydrocarbon into the swirling gases at a point removed from their point of entry and in a substantially radial direction, whereby the hydrocarbon is rapidly mixed with and decomposed by the swirling gases, cooling the resultant carbon black suspension and separating the black. The combustible mixture is injected at 60-180 ft./sec. through one or more of the tangentially directed ports 8 into refractory-lined chamber 1. A petroleum distillate, having an end point of 725 DEG F. and an aniline cloud point 10-125 DEG F. and 20-60 per cent aromatic content, with or without 1-2 parts steam is injected through radially directed tubes 9. The effluent suspension passes into vertical cooler 2 and the contact time which should not exceed 0.5 sec. at 2,000 DEG F. may be varied by use of water sprays 10. Some of the air needed may be injected through 4. Instead of steam air or inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen or natural gas may be added to the hydrocarbon and waste gas or natural gas may be used in the sprays 10 instead of water.
