Abstract

The n-phase of high-speed steels consists of the double carbide of iron and tungsten of compositions ranging from approximately Fe4W2C (37 per cent iron; 61 per cent tungsten; 2 per cent carbon) to approximately Fe3W3C (23 per cent iron; 75.5 per cent tungsten; 1.5 per cent carbon). The invention comprises the manufacture of metal articles by powder metallurgy methods in which iron-tungsten carbide and/or its analogue iron-molybdenum carbide is or are employed as a raw material. The compositions of iron-molybdenum carbide range from Fe4Mo2C (52.2 per cent iron; 45 per cent molybdenum; 2.8 per cent carbon) to Fe3Mo3C (39.8 per cent iron; 57.8 per cent molybdenum; 2.4 per cent carbon). The double carbides may be used in combination with the carbides of tungsten, titanium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum as well as molybdenum carbide Mo2C and chromium carbides Cr3C2, Cr7C3 and Cr23C6 the chromium in the latter being replaceable by iron and tungsten or molybdenum to form a compound Fe21W2C6 or Fe21Mo2C6.
