Abstract
A sintered compact formed from powdered iron produced as disclosed in Specification 618,293 is carburized in a medium, preferably gaseous, having a carburizing potential substantially higher than that in equilibrium with the desired final carbon content of the steel to be produced, and is then soaked in a medium having a carburization potential lower than that aforementioned and preferably in approximate equilibrium with the desired carbon content of the finished article. Carburization is preferably effected at a temperature in the range 1,600-2,100 DEG F. Alloys. In a steel alloy the alloying constituents may be manganese-1 per cent, ferro - manganese - 1.15 per cent, manganese-silicon eutectic (90 per cent Mn. 10 per cent Si)-0.55 per cent, silicon-1 per cent, molybdenum-1 per cent, ferro-vanadium-0.8 per cent, ferrochromium-4.5 per cent. Carbon is present, specifically 0.96 per cent and 0.93 per cent. Specification 659,665, [Group XXII], also is referred to.
