[Class 61(i)] A knife or like implement in which the blade or other tool is housed within the handle and can slide longitudinally to project through one end thereof, in which position it is secured during use, is provided with a lever hinged to the handle so as not to project abruptly therefrom, one end of the lever forming a shutter for the open end of the handle and the other end forming a thumb-piece which can be depressed against a spring to uncover the opening. In the form shown, a partition 16 divides the hollow handle into two compartments containing respectively a knife blade 18 and a marline spike 20. To prevent complete removal from the handle, each tool is provided with an enlarged tang 32 and each compartment with a restricted portion near its open end. Each of the latter openings is covered by a shutter 22 forming part of a lever 23 hinged to the handle at 24, the tail of each lever forming a thumb-piece 26 which can be depressed into a cavity 28 in the handle against the action of a coil spring 30. A groove is provided in each tool to be engaged by the shutter to hold it in projected position. A pair of pins is loosely mounted in the handle between the thumb pieces 26, the length of the pins being such as to prevent simultaneous operation of the two shutters. In a modification, Fig. 10, each shutter is provided with a pair of projections 40, 42 which engage when one shutter is open to keep the other closed.
