Abstract

598,959. Inking-apparatus. HOE & CO., Ltd., R., and CRABTREE, J. O. Feb. 27, 1945, No. 4894. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking mechanism comprises a reservoir or fountain, means to deliver ink therefrom to effect printing, and a device to mill ink as it passes to the reservoir, the device being isolated from the ink-delivering means and including at least one driven roller with at least part of its periphery below the normal ink level in the reservoir, so that ink is taken from the reservoir and re-worked. The mill comprises two rollers 6, 7, Figs. 1 and 4, rotated in opposite directions at different peripheral speeds by an electric motor. For use with an ink-pump mechanism, the invention comprises an ink reservoir 13, Fig. 1, filled to the level L, having a float 14 carried by a lever 15 with a sleeve portion 16 surrounding a feed-pipe 17, ports 18, 19, in said sleeve and pipe being aligned when the float is lowered, thus admitting ink to maintain the level L. The ink from port 18 falls on to the roller 6 and is milled before passing to the reservoir. A baffle 26 and plate 25, which are omitted in a modification, form a sub-reservoir 27, which has the effect of causing most of the ink to be repeatedly milled before entering the reservoir 13. From the reservoir, the ink passes to a well-known type of pump mechanism indicated at 20, for delivery to effect printing. For use with a fountain type of mechanism, the invention comprises a fountain roller 28, Fig. 4, the ink deposit on which is regulated by a block 29, and a reservoir R, supplied with ink from a trough 31 and milled by rollers 6, 7.
