Abstract

580,146. Valves. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and JONES, W. June 1, 1944, No. 10546. [Class 135] [Also in Group VI] A valve is provided-in an anµsthetic-administration apparatus wherein in one position a primary passageway is open and a secondary closed, and in an extreme position, the primary is closed and the secondary open. The valve 10 shown in Fig. 2 is adapted for connection in the expiratory tube of a closed cycle anµsthetic apparatus, the passageway 11 being connected on the right, e.g. to valve EV of the apparatus shown in Specification 577,645, and on the left to the face mask. On pressing control member 13, the seating 15 is closed by the flexible diaphragm 16. Simultaneously, the thrust pin 20 depresses a spring-urged valve member 23 from its seating 22, thereby allowing oxygen to flow to the mask via nipple 27, passageway 12 and tube 14. If desired, the tube 14 may be external to the main expiratory (or inspiratory) tube. The valve 10 also houses a spring- urged release valve 29 adapted to vent gas via orifice 31 if the pressure of the oxygen exceeds a predetermined amount, the value of which is altered by adjustment of spring-retaining cap 32. Fig. 3 shows a modified release valve wherein the excess pressure lifts member 33 from its seating 36, the gas escaping via ports 37 and 39. Members of different mass may be used at will, the upper surfaces thereof being appropriately marked and visible through the transparent dome 38 of control member 13. Specification 550,296 is referred to.
