Abstract
912,418. Respiratory appliances. VICKERS RESEARCH Ltd. Sept. 25, 1961 [Sept. 5, 1960], No. 30552/60. Class 81 (2). In a breathing-mask, such as for use for high altitudes, the exhalation valve is controlled by a pressure-sensitive member connected to the inlet, the member having means for delaying its response to pressure changes. Respirable gas is supplied to a mask 6 through a tube 4 and open ducts 5 and vitiated air passes out through an exhalation valve 12 to an outlet 9. However, a capsule 13, having its interior connected through a narrow-bore tube 17 to the supply pipe 4, carries a pressure member 14 which may bear upon the exhalation valve plate 11 to tend to hold it closed. Thus as the supply pressure is increased with increasing altitude an equivalent pressure is applied to the valve 12 to prevent a through flow and consequent wastage of gas. However the exhalation valve may be readily opened by the rapid, slight rise in pressure caused by exhalation of the user since this is not transmitted through the restricted tube 17.
