Abstract
571,142. Casting repair material in furnace hearths. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., RUSSELL, G. A. V., and COY, E. R. Jan. 31, 1944, No. 1767. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for applying repair material to the worn portions of a furnace hearth comprises a receptacle for the repair material provided with a suitable discharge opening and adapted to be mounted on the arm of the usual furnace charging machine by which the receptacle is introduced through a furnace door opening to discharge the material on to the eroded portion of the hearth. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the receptacle 3 is supported on an arm 1 adapted to be attached at 2 to the arm of a furnace charging machine and is provided with a rear wall 3a inclined at an angle which is greater than the angle of repose of the material, a front wall 3c extending nearly vertically from a discharge opening 4 to the horizontal roof 3b and sides 3d tapering towards the discharge opening. To charge the receptacle, it is inverted by rotating the arm. of the charging machine and is filled through the opening 4 from a portable hopper 5, Fig. 4, which is supported over the opening or through other suitable openings provided in the receptacle. The receptacle is then introduced in an inverted position through a furnace door opening and then discharged by rotating it at 'the portion of hearth to be repaired.
