Abstract

559,923. Cut-outs. OLDHAM & SON, Ltd., AKROYD, H., and HOLT, H. Sept. 18, 1942, No. 13176. [Class 38 (i)] A cut-out for isolating a battery from the wiring of, for example, an aircraft on impact comprises a housing 1 connected in the circuit by means of end caps 4, 6, one of which has a weakened zone and contains an explosive charge that is detonated by a striker. The cap 6 is weakened by an annular groove 15 and encloses a flanged sleeve 14 containing a detonator. The striker 8 located in the housing 1 between springs 9, 10, carries a pin 11 in line with an opening 12 into the detonator chamber. The housing is mounted in the aircraft &c. in such a position that the striker is thrown forward against the action of the spring 10 in the event of a crash. The striker can be locked by a pin 20 attached to a spring clip 19 and passing through a rubber washer 23 into a hole 21 in the housing 1. In a modification, the explosive charge 43, Fig. 2, has an electric ignition circuit 42 connected to an inertia switch. It is arranged in a housing 36 having a weakened zone 37 and attached to a collapsable strip connection 35 to form the electrical connection between the cable terminals 31, 32. The cross-section of the weakened zone may be reduced that the heat generated in the event of a short circuit will ignite the detonator.
