Abstract
546,072. Automatic regulation. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 14, 1941, No. 10339. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] Constant voltage at load circuit terminals 3 is maintained with varying load current or power factor or with varying voltage at supply terminals 1, by series connected capacity 5 and inductance 4 in shunt across the load circuit terminals, the inductance having a core member with an air gap bridged by portions 9 which quickly saturate and the condenser being chosen so that the slope of its volt-ampere characteristic is the same as that of the inductance after saturation is reached and over a range of the order of full load current. Current variations in this constant voltage shunt circuit or in the load circuit co-operate with series impedance 2 on the impedance of the supply source in producing a constant load circuit voltage. If the impedance 2 is constituted by an inductance similar to inductance 4 in parallel with a capacity with a characteristic of like slope constant current will be maintained with constant voltage. A transformer may supply the load and regulating circuits and its leakage impedance may co-operate in the regulation; the load circuit terminals may be connected through an adjustable ratio autotransformer. A resistance or other means for power dissipation may be included in the shunt circuit 4, 5 to prevent oscillation. Specification 501,209 is referred to.
