Abstract

524,362. Case-hardening. SHELL MARKETING CO., Ltd., and RIGBY, R. Jan. 28, 1939, No. 2990. [Class 72] Articles of ferrous metal or ferrous alloys are case-hardened by heating them in a chamber to 1000‹-1400‹C. in an atmosphere composed of a mixture of 35-45 per cent. of propane, propylene or a mixture thereof, and the remainder air. Before quenching, the treated article may be soaked at 1000‹-1150‹C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g., one produced by the combustion with an insufficient supply of air to combust completely hydrocarbons, town gas, coke-oven gas or ammonia. The case-hardening chamber may be provided with a perforated hearth through which the gas may be introduced with or without a fan and the hearth or other supporting member for the articles may be given a continuous or intermittent oscillating and/or reciprocating movement or may be vibrated or tapped.
