515,037. Olefinic hydrocarbons. LONDON TESTING LABORATORY, Ltd., and STEINSCHLAEGER, M. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5191. [Class 2 (iii)] Mixtures of hydrocarbons containing a high proportion of olefines are' produced by passing a gaseous mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen first over a cobalt catalyst at a temperature of 180-210‹ C. and at substantially atmospheric pressure and then passing the resulting gaseous mixture over an iron catalyst at a temperature of 200-240‹ C. and at a pressure of 0-10 atmospheres. After the first conversion by means of the cobalt catalyst, the carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons produced may be removed and additional carbon monoxide and hydrogen introduced into the gaseous mixture. In an example, water gas is first passed over a catalyst containing cobalt, thorium and kieselguhr and carbon dioxide is removed from the gaseous product by washing with water under pressure. A further quantity of water gas is added to the remaining mixture of gases, which are then passed over a catalyst containing iron and copper at 10 atmospheres pressure.
