Abstract

508,945. Fuel-injection pumps. BISCHOF, B. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 35987. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 30, 1938. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] As shown in Fig. 1. fuel is supplied by a pump having a pressure chamber 14 which communicates past a non-return valve 23 with a conduit 26 leading to an injection nozzle. During inward movement of the pump piston 1, after the pump inlet port 21 has been closed, the valve 23 is raised and an intermittent or continuous preliminary fuel injection occurs until a groove 15 in the piston 1 uncovers the port 21. During further movement of the piston 1, a control edge 17 closes the port 21 and the main injection occurs until an inclined edge 11 opens the port 21. The fuel pressure in the conduit 16 is gradually released. after the injection valve 29 has closed, through bores 24, 25 in the valve 23. To vary the quantity of fuel injected, the piston 1 is rotated by a rack-and-pinion gear 9, 8. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the preliminary charge is delivered past the valve 29 until a groove 59 in the piston establishes communication with a conduit 57 to allow some of the fuel to enter a chamber 72 in the injection nozzle. After an edge 64 has closed the conduit 57, continued movement of the piston produces the main injection which terminates when an inclined edge 65 opens the conduit 57. A throttling port 56 limits the pressure in the pump, the pressure being higher at high piston speeds.
