Abstract

487,897. Stuffing - box substitutes. PULSOMETER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and WARREN, R. Jan. 30, 1937, No. 2755. [Class 122 (v)] In rubbing-collar devices which are kept in contact with the shaft or casing by flexible means and wherein each ring has a resilient member in contact with it and the casing or the shaft, the resilient member is so shaped that its free or outer edge is of reduced thickness and more flexible than its main circumference so that it continues to function even when the rubbing-ring becomes worn and the resilient member adheres to the casing or shaft. In the construction shown, two spaced sealing- rings C engage abutments B<1> on the casing. Rubber or like cup-shaped resilient members D with outer edges D<1> of reduced thickness, engage the outer surfaces of the ring C. A spring E is housed between the members D and engages flanges on shrouds F covering the edges of the rings. In a modification, the shroud is provided with externally projecting flanges which form abutments for the ends of the spring. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the rings C<1> engage a central flange on the shaft, the wider ends of the resilient members make contact with the shoulders B<2>, and their outer ends engage the sealing-rings. Spring- pressed shrouds engage the contacting edges of the resilient and rubbing-rings.
