Abstract

466,983. Cyclone separators. BUELL COMBUSTION CO., Ltd. (Tongeren, H. van) May 8, 1936, No. 13115. [Class 23] Small cyclones 1 are arranged in pairs of parallel rows with common inlet passages 3 between the rows of each pair ; the inlet passages are of constant width and decreasing height. This is more compact than the arrangement of the cyclones in two converging rows with an inlet passage of constant height and decreasing width. Valves 6 may be provided at the front of the common inlet passages. Separate dust hoppers may be provided for each pair of rows, or, a single hopper for several pairs. In the latter case, back flow from one pair to another is prevented by pendulum valves or doors which open to permit the passage of dust only when sufficient dust has accumulated to overcome the loading of the valve. In the arrangement shown, air to be cleaned enters at 12 into a chamber 11 and air carrying the largest particles goes forward to a throat 15 and thence to separators 13 suited to deal with the larger particles. The remainder of the air passes between blades 16 to a chamber 17 and thence to the inlet passages 3. The chamber 11 has a movable wall 18 which is used to reduce the size of the chamber as the flow of gas is reduced. The space behind the wall 18 may communicate with the chamber 17 and then the greater gas pressure which obtains in the chamber 11 tends to press the wall 18 outwards. As this difference of pressure diminishes with the gas flow it can be used to produce automatic movements of the wall 18 which may be supported against the resultant gas pressure by a suitable spring or by a weight-supporting cord. The movement of the wall 18 may be used to operate the valves 6 also. Servomotors may be used. In an alternative construction, the wall carrying the blades 16 is movable automatically under the direct difference of pressure existing in the chambers 11 and 17. Fig. 13 shows a form of the separator described in Specification 390,053 in which dust extracted by way of a slot 38 passes down an external conduit 39 and enters the cyclone again through slot 40. The channels 39 are provided by the triangular spaces between the several cyclone inlet scrolls shown in Fig. 6.
