[Class 8 (ii)] [See also Group I] A filter comprising a helix or a number of rings is provided with a cleaning blade p having a cutting edge p<1> and a part p<2> which closes the aperture between adjacent rings to prevent the accumulated matter detached by the cutting edge p<1> from being forced out on the outlet side of the filter. Any matter on the outlet side of the apertures is guided to the inlet side by the extended ends p<3> of the blade. Fig. 4 shows a helical filtering element f<1> with a cleaning blade p mounted in a holder r which can slide vertically on a rod x, the cleaning being effected by rotating the filtering element by a shaft s. The blade p may be situated inside or outside the element f<1> and when inside it may be mounted on the shaft s, the filtering element remaining stationary during the cleaning process. Fig. 11 shows another form of filtering element with which the cleaning blade may be used in which a number of rings f of triangular section are spaced apart by collars g<1> threaded on bars g. The bars g can be moved towards and away from the rings f thus altering the distance between the latter. The holder r may, as shown in Fig. 6, form part of a spiral thread and abut against the filter element f. Two or more filter elements may be mounted within a single casing, the outlet of one element forming the inlet of the next. The elements may be placed one above another or one within another, and one may be rotatable and have a stationary cleaning blade while the other is fixed and has a moving blade.
