Abstract

Sulphonated glycerol monododecyl ethers, or the alkali, ammonium, amine, or other salts thereof, are used as soap substitutes, e.g. for producing foam, or for wetting, degreasing, cleansing, emulsifying, dispersing, impregnating, peptizing, stabilizing, levelling, distributing, or dissolving purposes. They may be used in acid, neutral, or alkaline baths or in baths containing electrolytes, lime, magnesia, or other substances hardening water. Other wetting, washing, cleansing, emulsifying, and dispersing agents may be added, e.g. perborates, persulphates, percarbonates, soda, water-glass, borax, trisodium phosphate, sodium sulphate, acid sodium sulphate, liquid hydrocarbons, alcohols, and enzymes such as urease or pancreatin, so as to form soap creams, polishing agents, and cosmetic or other preparations. A filed sample is produced by treating 260 lb. of glycerol-mono-dodecyl ether with 196 lb. of sulphuric acid monohydrate with cooling until the product forms a clear solution in water, neutralizing with 36--37 per cent caustic soda while adding ice, and atomizing to a dry powder. It may be freed from sodium sulphate by extraction with alcohol.ALSO:Sulphonated glycerol mono-dodecyl-ethers, or their alkali, ammonium, amine, or other salts are used as soap substitutes.
