Abstract
409,744. Seat adjustments. CHAPMAN, A. W., 115, Howards Lane, Putney, London. Nov. 3, 1932, No. 31038. [Class 52 (ii).] In an adjustable seat of the type in which a seat - supporting member is connected by pairs of crossed levers to a fixed member, at least two sets of levers are used, each lever is pivoted at one end to one of the members and slidably connected at the other end to the other member, and means are provided for adjusting and retaining the seat member which in conjunction with the crossed levers, hold the seat member rigid in adjusted position. The adjusting means acts directly on the seat supporting member. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a seat-frame 1 is supported on a lower frame 2, which may be mounted on slides on the floor of a vehicle, by three pairs of levers, each consisting of levers 5, 6, arranged on three sides of the frames. The lower end of the lever 5 is pivoted to a bracket on the lower frame, while the lower end of the lever 6 is pivoted to a sliding bracket 10 which has an upturned lower edge engaging under the downturned edge of a bracket 13 secured to the lower frame, a line-contact sliding connection such as that described in Specification 379,902 being obtained. The upper end of the lever 6 is pivoted to the frame 1, and the upper end of the lever 5 is pivoted to a sliding bracket similar to the bracket 10. The two levers are pivoted together where they cross. The other pairs of levers are similarly arranged. The seat is adjusted and retained in position by means comprising a screwed rod 15 passing through a nut in a bracket 16 on the frame 1 and pivoted to a bracket on the lower frame 2, the nut being rotated through bevel gearing by a handle 21. Since the arms of each set of levers are equal, the frame 1 will remain parallel to the frame 2 during adjustment, but levers 24, 25, Fig. 5, with unequal arms may be used, in which case one edge of the seat frame will be moved through a greater distance than the other. In some cases, the seat frame may be hinged at one edge to the fixed frame. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, a pair of levers is arranged along one edge of the seat, and a second pair at right angles to the first under the centre of the seat.
