Abstract
373,270. Discharge lamps. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, and BRETT, G. F., 23, Cross Flatts Avenue, Dewsbury Road, Leeds. Feb. 21, 1931, No. 5540. [Class 39 (i).] A lamp has an auxiliary electrode formed by dividing the cathode into two parts, one part consisting of a long cylinder and the other part, acting as the auxiliary electrode, consisting of a metal ring or cylinder of small area mounted between the long cylinder and the anode, so that a trigger discharge may be produced for initiating the main discharge. As shown, the auxiliary electrode consists of a wire ring or short cylinder AE mounted between a cylindrical anode A and a long cylindrical cathode C. A glass sleeve S prevents blackening of the envelope. In a modification the auxiliary electrode is mounted around the gap between the anode and cathode, and outside of the main discharge, so that the light from the discharge to the auxiliary electrode is small when viewed from the direction of the cathode. In other arrangements the anode consists of a wire ring, or of a plate or disc at right-angles to the axis of the cathode.
