Abstract
Soaps of great wetting and emulsifying powers are obtained by sulphonating spermaceti or spermaceti oil with 30 per cent or more of sulphuric acid and heating the product with excess of alkali. Ordinary soaps and other substances may be added. For example, a liquid toilet soap results from mixing 3 lb. of 2,2-pentamethylene-4 oxymethyl-dihydrodioxol, 30 lb. of a 20 per cent spermaceti-oil soap, and 100 lb. of a 20 per cent soap made from oleic acid and coconut oil.ALSO:Soaps having wetting and emulsifying properties are obtained by sulphonating spermaceti or spermaceti oil with 30 per cent or more of sulphuric acid, and heating the product with excess of alkali. For example, spermaceti oil is sulphonated in known manner with 30 per cent of sulphuric acid, washed with salt water, made weakly alkaline with alkali hydrate or carbonate, and then boiled with caustic lye; a gelatinous soap results.
