Abstract
312,345. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I., (Assignees of Lazier, W. A.). May 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Esters and other oxygenated organic compounds; hydrocarbons. - The conversion of primary alcohols into esters, together with smaller amounts of compounds such as acids, aldehydes, ketones, higher alcohols and hydrocarbons, is effected at high temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising copper and one or more difficultly reducible oxides, preferably of metals of the second group. In an example, ethyl alcohol is passed at 375‹ C. under pressure over a catalyst prepared by melting together magnesium oxide, zinc oxide and cupric oxide, crushing and screening the product, and reducing it in carbon dioside and hydrogen. A 20 per cent yield of ethyl acetate is obtained. In another example, the catalyst contains copper, magnesium oxide and manganese oxide. The use of oxides of chromium and of the rare earth metals is also referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 287,846.
