Description

METHOD OF PACKAGING LOW WEIGHT ARTICLES
The present invention relates to a method for packaging a plurality of low weight articles, e.g. parallelepiped boxes containing cereals flakes.
An object of the present invention is the reduction of the carbon footprint of the conventional methods of packaging.
According to the present invention, this object is achieved by means of a method for packaging a plurality of articles, comprising the steps of: - preparing a cardboard or corrugated board blank comprising a series extending along a median longitudinal axis of a first top panel, a first side panel, a bottom panel, a second side panel and a second top panel, wherein said panels are delimited by first, second, third and fourth folding lines parallel to each other, and fifth and sixth folding lines parallel to each other and said median longitudinal axis and orthogonal to said first, second, third and fourth folding lines, wherein a left flap and a right flap are attached to each of said panels in correspondence of said fifth and sixth folding lines, respectively, - longitudinally cutting said blank into two semi-blanks following a substantially wavy cutting pattern at least in correspondence of said first side panel, bottom panel, and second side panel, - joining together said two semi-blanks by a paper sheet, which is attached to respective surfaces adjacent to said cutting pattern of said first top panel, first side panel, bottom panel, second side panel, and second side panel, which are widened due to addition of a central part formed by said paper sheet, so that a hybrid blank is formed, - arranging said plurality of articles on said widened bottom panel, - folding said widened first and second side panels of 900 in respect of the widened bottom panel about said second and third folding lines, respectively, -folding said left and right flaps of the widened first side panel and second side panel of 900 about said fifth and sixth folding lines, respectively, so as they lie substantially orthogonally to both the widened bottom panel and the widened side panels, - folding said widened first and second top panels of 90° in respect of the widened first and second side panels about said first and fourth folding lines, respectively, so as they lie substantially parallelly to the widened bottom panel, - folding said left and right flaps of the widened first and second top panels and bottom panel of 900 about said fifth and sixth folding lines, respectively, so that they lie substantially orthogonally to the widened bottom panel, and - attaching said left and right flaps of the widened first and second top panels to the folded left and right flaps of the widened first and second side panels, respectively, and attaching the left and right folded flaps of the widened bottom panel to both the left and right folded flaps of the widened first and second side panels.
Preferred features of the method of the invention are disclosed by the claims dependent on claim 1 which follow.
A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by the hybrid blank obtainable by performing the above-captioned method up to the step of joining together two semi-blanks of cardboard or corrugated board by a paper sheet.
A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a package obtainable by performing the above-disclosed method, and having a central portion of paper and end portions of cardboard or corrugated board, wherein said central and end portions wrap a plurality of articles.
The method according to the present invention uses a hybrid blank having a central portion of paper and end portions of cardboard or corrugated board, which is thus lighter than an equivalent blank integrally made of the former material.
Accordingly, the impact on the environment of both the production of this blank and the successive transport of the package using it is meaningfully decreased depending on the weight reduction.
On the other hand, the filling and erection steps of the hybrid blank substantially mirror the ones of conventional mono-material blanks, so as minimal adaptations are requested for the presently used filling and erection equipment.
Further advantages and features of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings, in which: figures 1 to 4 are respective perspective views of successive steps of a process for producing a hybrid blank to be used in the method according to the invention, and figures 5 to 10 are respective perspective views of successive steps of a method according to the invention for packaging a plurality of articles by using the hybrid blank illustrated by figure 4.
Figure 1 illustrates a cardboard or corrugaed board blank 10 comprising a series extending along a median longitudinal axis 12 of a first top panel 14, a first side panel 16, a bottom panel 18, a second side panel 20 and a second top panel 22.
The panels are delimited by first, second, third and fourth folding lines 24a-d parallel to each other, and fifth and sixth folding lines 26a-b parallel to each other and said median longitudinal axis 12 and orthogonal to the first, second, third and fourth folding lines 24a-d. The panels 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 are thus rectangular.
A left flap 28 and a right flap 30 are attached to each of the panels 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 in correspondence of the fifth and sixth folding lines 26a-b, respectively, The blank 10 is longitudinally cut along the axis 12 into two semi-blanks 33 (figure 2) following a substantially wavy cutting pattern 32 in correspondence of the first side panel 16, bottom panel 18, and second side panel 20, whereas the cutting pattern is rectilinear in correspondence of the first 14 and second 22 top panels.
The substantially wavy cutting pattern 32 is formed by sinusoidal waves having a constant period, but in other not illustrated embodiments of the present invention might be formed by square, trapezoidal, triangular or sawtooth waves having a constant period or a variable period. Advantageously, the variable period is shorter in the mid portion than in the end portions of the blank 10.
Successively, the two semi-blanks 33 are joined together by a paper sheet 34 (figure 3), which is attached e.g. by glue to respective surfaces adjacent to the cutting pattern 32. Accordingly, the first top panel 14, first side panel 16, bottom panel 18, second side panel 20, and second side panel 22 are widened due to the addition of a central part formed by the paper sheet 34, so that a hybrid blank 36 is formed (figure 4). For the sake of improved clarity, such widened panels are indicated in the successive parts of the present description with the previously used number, additionally followed by the letter "w".
A plurality of low weight articles 38 are then arranged on the widened bottom panel 18w (figure 5), and the widened first 16w and second 20w side panels are folded of 90° (figure 6) in respect of the widened bottom panel 18w about the second 24b and third 24c folding lines, respectively. During this step, the flaps 28, 30 of each side panel 16w, 20w and the respective adjacent top panels 14w, 22w with the associated flaps 28, 30 keep on lying in the same plane as the respective widened side panel 16w, 20w (figure 7).
The left and right flaps 28, 30 of the widened first side panel 16w and second side panel 20w are folded (figure 8) of 90° about the fifth and sixth folding lines 26a-b, respectively, so as they lie substantially orthogonally to both the widened bottom panel 18w and the widened side panels 16w, 20w.
The widened first 14w and second 22w top panels, with the respective flaps 28, 30 are folded (figure 9) of 90° in respect of the widened first 16w and second 20w side panels about the first 24a and fourth 24d folding lines, respectively, so as they lie substantially parallelly to the widened bottom panel 18w.
The left and right flaps 28, 30 of the widened first 14w and second 22w top panels and bottom panel 18w are folded (figure 10) of 900 about the fifth and sixth folding lines 26a-b, respectively, so that they lie substantially orthogonally to the widened bottom panel 18w (figure 10) and are attached to the widened side panels 16w, 20w. Specifically, the left and right flaps 28, 30 of the widened first 14w and second 22w top panels are attached, e.g. glued, to the folded left and right flaps 28, 30 of the widened first 16w and second 20w side panels, respectively, and the left and right folded flaps 28, 30 of the widened bottom panel 18w are attached, e.g. glued, to both the left and right folded flaps 28, 30 of the widened first 16w and second 20w side panels.
Accordingly, a package 40, which has the shape of a parallelepiped having bottom, top, front, rear, left side and right side walls, is obtained. The bottom and side walls are formed by the widened bottom 18w, first side 16w and second side 20w panels, respectively. The top wall is formed by the widened first 14w and second 22w top panels and the front and rear walls are formed by the attached left 28 and right 30 flaps, respectively.
The package 40 has a central portion of paper and end portions of cardboard or corrugated board, and wraps a plurality of articles 38, which are visible through a central strip-shaped gap 42 of the front, top and rear walls.
Due to the replacement with paper of cardboard or corrugated board material in the hybrid blank 36, the package 40 obtained therefrom is lighter, and the impact on the environment of both the production and handling thereof is meaningfully decreased.
Of course, the principles of the invention remaining the same, the details of construction and embodiments may be widely varied with respect to those described purely by way of example, without thereby departing from the claimed scope. E.g., the steps of the claimed method might be done in different sites. The wavy cutting pattern might be substantially any and repeat itself according to a regular period or not. Some of the panels and flaps might be provided with respective continuous semi-perforated breaking lines, allowing, when the package is placed on the point of sale, the detachment of parts thereof in order to facilitate the access to the articles of the customers. The side panels might be additionally provided with respective apertures allowing gripping during handling of the package.
