Abstract

An item or substance it is wished to authenticate is labeled by means of a predetermined macromolecular first compound (signal compound) without divulging the identity of the first compound, to which first compound a complementary second compound is capable of binding such as to enable the presence of the first compound to be revealed and thus the genuineness of the item or substance verified.
