Abstract

A skin care composition, for example a cream or a lotion, comprises at least one compound selected from coumarin, a naturally occurring substance containing coumarin, a derivative of coumarin and a derivative of a naturally occurring substance containing coumarin. Preferred compositions comprise up to 5% by weight of the composition of a coumarinic ester formed from a tocopherol and/or a chiral amyl alcohol.

Description

Skin Care Composition This invention relates to a skin care composition.
Skin care compositions are frequently applied to the skin to reduce dryness and to provide protection from the effects of sunlight.
It is well known that some organic chemicals may offer protection against the harmful ultra-violet radiation of the sun and such materials have been incorporated into skin care compositions, usually creams or lotions.
According to the present invention a skin care composition comprises at least one compound selected from coumarin, a naturally occurring substance containing coumarin and a derivative of coumarin or of such a coumarin containing substance.
The skin care composition may be a cream or a lotion.
Specific examples of compounds for use in compositions which fall within the scope of my invention are coumarin itself (also known as benzopyrone or the anhydride of coumarinic acid), coumarinic acid (not usually obtainable in the free state), coumarinic esters, salts of coumarinic acid and Tonka (Touquin) bean extracts. The compound may be used as such or in the form of a glycoside or attached to a polymeric material which may enable a continuous slow release dosage of the compound to be obtained over a longer period of time than can be achieved using the same compound in a low molecular state.
By the use of a skin care composition according to my invention it is possible to obtain some protection against the development of skin cancers. Surprisingly such compositions may also reduce melanomas already in existence.
The coumarin compound which is the essential ingredient of a skin care composition is included in an amount of up to 5% by weight of the skin care composition. Other ingredients of the composition are those well known in the art such as avocado pear oil, liquid paraffin and a dispersant such as sorbitan monolaurate or diglycollaurate. Generally the solids content of total ingredients of the composition is 25-602 by weight, the balance being water.
The composition is prepared by mixing the ingredients and the water to form an emulsion (e.g. a lotion or a cream).
The following Examples illustrate formulations for skin care compositions according to my invention (all percentages being by weight of total).
Example 1 - Composition of a basic thick skin cream.
Sorbitan monolaurate 5X Avocado pear oil 25X Coumarin dissolved in the oil 1X Water 69Z Preservative (e.g. parahydroxyethylbenzoate 0.1-0.25X) may be added and any perfumery requirement.
Example 2 - Composition of a rich milky base.
Liquid paraffin 40X Tonka bean extract 2Z Diglycollaurate 12Z Water 45Z Preservative and perfume as required.
Example 3 A composition is prepared as in Example 1 substituting a coumarin ester formed from D-alpha tocopherol (the naturally occurring form of Vitamin E) for the coumarin.
Example 4 A composition is prepared as in Example 1 substituting a coumarin ester formed from a chiral amyl alcohol (in this case L-2-methyl butanol-l) for the coumar.n.
