Abstract

224,952. Frankland, E. Aug. 20, 1923. Laminar springs; fluid-friction vibration-dampers. - A spring suspension for a motor vehicle comprises a primary spring supporting the frame on the axle and a secondary spring mounted to float on the frame under normal load conditions but yieldingly interconnected to the frame and axle by means which, when the frame moves downwards relatively to the axle, establish the secondary spring in engagement to resist such movement. The primary spring 3, clamped to the axle in the usual way, is connected at its ends to the frame 1 by shackles 5, 6, a radius rod 9 being provided to restrain the axle. The secondary spring 10 connected at its front end to the frame by a shackle 14 is mounted at its centre on a plate 12 carried by a shackle 13 connected to the primary spring shackle, its rear end being connected to links 16 pivoted to the primary spring at 18 and connected at 21 to the rod 22 of a piston 24 working in a dash-pot cylinder 1 secured to the frame 1. The rod 22 is ball-jointed to the piston 24, as shown in Fig. 3. When the frame descends relatively to the axle the engagement of the piston with the cylinder head brings the secondary spring into action as a load support, while rebound of the frame upwardly induces a vacuum in the cylinder exerting a lifting stress on the piston rod which is resisted by the secondary spring.
