Abstract

450,024. Spring frames for cycles. ALLFREY, M. A. A., Technical Staff Mess, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, Hampshire. Jan. 8, 1935, No. 692. [Class 136 (iii)] [See also Group XXXII] In a road vehicle such as a motor or pedal cycle the wheel axle is mounted at each end in the free ends of a pair of arms pivoted to the frame, each arm passing entirely through a guide member situated adjacent the axle mounting. The wheel axle 14 is mounted at each end in one of a pair of arms 6 which are rigidly connected together at their pivot end and are pivoted, preferably with friction discs, at 11 to the frame. Adjacent to the axle the arm passes through slots in a cylinder and piston which serve to guide the arm vertically and prevent lateral movement. Above the piston 12 in the cylinder is mounted a compression spring 15 to serve as a spring suspension, an additional tension spring 29 being mounted as shown if desired. The arm end 8 preferably contacts with the piston 12 through an adjustable push rod 17 and a rubber buffer 19. A friction damping arrangement may be provided comprising two segments 20, 21 lined with friction material adapted by means of studs 25, 26, and caps 23, 24 to move with the piston and to be adjustably tightened on to the cylinder. In a modification, the upper and lower ends of the cylinder 1 are connected by a duct 34 so that on the down stroke oil is forced into the upper part of the cylinder whence it seeps down through openings to lubricate the working parts, the oil and air imprisoned in the lower part of the cylinder when the piston shuts off the duct serving also to cushion the movement of the piston and, therefore, of the axle.
