Abstract

A cardboard sleeve of the type used to contain metal or plastic tubs has a base 1, two opposite side walls 2, 3 and a top 4 adhered to a panel 5 hinged to one of the side walls 3. The panel 5 has a further member 6 hingedly attached to it shaped to fit automatically e.g. into a recessed top of a tub. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements to cardboard sleeves This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of cardboard sleeves of the type used to contain metal or plastic tubs or the like having recesses or projections on the tops, sides or bottom and which are hereinafter defined as "sleeves of the kind specified". With hitherto known sleeves of the kind specified various constructions to hoid the tub in place have been used. However, such constructions have had the disadvantage of having apertures, slots or folded areas on the side walls thereby reducing their display value.
The object of the present invention, therefore, is to overcome the above disadvantage by providing means integral with the sleeve of the type specified whereby a hinged member automatically locates in a recess or projection on the tub or the like, thereby restricting lateral movement between the tub and the sleeve. According to one aspect of the present invention a six panel blank folded and adhesively secured according to common practice consists of a rectangular base, two opposed side walls and a top panel hingedly connected one to the other: the said top panel being attached to one side wail is adhered to a panel attached to the opposite side wall and this panel has a further member hingedly attached to its opposite marginal edge and folded through 180".
This member is hereinafter referred to as "the retaining member". Thus the blank merely requires to be unfolded and the sleeve is ready for loading as the natural elasticity of the cardboard causes the retaining member to spring into location in the recessed top of the-tub. The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein gure 1 shows a blank for a sleeve of the kind specified.
Figure 2 shows an elevation of a folded blank.
Figure 3 shows an elevation of an erected sleeve.
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of an erected sleeve with a partially cut-away top to reveal the method of retaining a tub in place.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2, the blank illustrated shows base 1, side walls 2 and 3, top 4, panel 5 and retaining member 6 which are hingedly connected by the crease lines 7 to 11: the retaining member 6 has a profile to fit into the recessed top of the selected tub and the shaded area shows the application of adhesive. Figure 2 shows the retaining member 6 folded through 180" along the crease line 11. In Figure 3 the retaining member 6 is shown as having sprung into a downward position along the crease line 11. In Figure 4 the retaining member 6 is shown located into the recessed top of a tub. In order to insert a tub into a sleeve of the kind specified the retaining member 6 is gently folded into contact with the reverse face of top 4, a tub is inserted until the member 11 locates into the recess or projection on the tub, thus restricting further movement.
1. A cardboard sleeve having a base, two opposite side walls and a top adhered to a panel hinged to one of the side walls, such panel having a further member hingedly attached to it prestressed by folding and shaped to fit automatically into recesses or projections on a tub or the like.
2. A cardboard sleeve as claimed in Claim (1) wherein the hinged member is not prestressed and therefore has to be folded into position after erection of the sleeve.
3. A cardboard sleeve as claimed in Claims (1) and (2) to accommodate two or more tubs or the like in a horizontal or vertical configuration.
4. A cardboard sleeve as claimed in Claims (1) to (3) having the retaining member adjacent to either sidewall or the base.
5. A cardboard sleeve as claimed in Claims (1) to (4) having the retaining member divided into two or more sections which may be folded independently.
