Description

A Container The invention relates to a container made from a blank.
The invention provides a container made from a blank, the container being in the form of a hollow cuboidal box having upper and lower walls, two side walls and two end walls, and a handle upstanding from the upper wall intermediate the two side walls, wherein the region of the blank defining the upper wall and handle comprises first and second adjoining panels foldable against one another to define the handle, first and second upper wall portions on opposite sides of the handle, respectively, which upper wall portions define the upper wall of the box and two flaps connected to each upper wall portion at opposite ends, respectively, of the box, one of the two flaps at each end of the box being extended when considering the box in blank form to lie alongside the adjacent first or second panel, the underside of a first of said two flaps being adhered to the upper surface of the second of said two flaps with the box in an assembled condition.
Preferred and/or optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2-10.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which one embodiment of a box according to the invention can be made, Figure 2 is a perspective view of a box made from the blank of Figure 1, from the top, one side and one end, and Figure 3 is the same perspective view of the box of Figure 2 with an end cover open.
Referring to the drawings, the blank shown in Figure 1 is formed of printed cardboard and comprises panels 10 and 11 which form a handle of the box of Figures 2 and 3, panels 12 and 13 which form a lower wall of the box and an internal platform, respectively, strip portions 14 and 15 which support the platform in an elevated position with respect to the lower wall of the box, side wall portions 16 and 17, and upper wall portions 18 and 19. Fold lines 20 a-i are provided between adjoining parts of the blank referred to above.
All parts referred to above have a generally rectangular outline with the exception of the side and upper wall portions 16 to 19. The side wall portion 16 and the ajoining upper wall portion 18 have a single generally rectangular window 21 curved at its corners and covered with a transparent plastics film. Indeed the film may overlay the entire blank. The side wall portion 17 and adjoining upper wall portion 19 have a like window 22.
All of the aforesaid parts are folded with respect to adjoining parts into the plane of the paper, in order to make the box, with the exception of panels 10 and 11 which are folded out of the plane of the paper with respect to adjoining upper wall portions 18 and 19, respectively, about fold lines 20b and 20d.
The panels 10 and 11 each have an aperture 23 therein. The apertures 23 come into register when the undersides of panels 10 and 11 are folded against one another so that the box can be suspended, for example, from a display stand.
Wing portions 24 are connected by fold lines 30 to opposite ends of the panel 13 and wing portions 25 are connected by fold lines 31 to opposite ends of the side wall portion 16. Narrow flaps 26 are connected by fold lines 32 to the distal ends of wing portions 24 and narrow flaps 27 are connected by fold lines 33 to the distal ends of wing portions 25.
Fold lines 30 and 32 are perforated for ease of folding and as will be seen panel 13 is not as long as panels 10, 11 and 12, strips 14 and 15 and side and upper wall portions 16 to 19.
Narrow flaps 28 are connected by fold lines 34 to opposite ends of side wall portion 17 and wider flaps 29 are connected by fold lines 35 to opposite ends of the panel 12.
Flaps 36 are connected by fold lines 37 to the upper wall portion 18 and flaps 38 are connected by fold lines 39 to the upper wall portion-19.
The flaps 36 are confined within extensions of fold lines 20a and 20b but flaps 38 are extended along the blank to lie alongside the panel 11.
The blank is firstly folded along lines 20a.-i with flaps 38 partly overlying respective flaps 36.,. and the strips 14 and 15 and the panel 13 within the box. Strips 14 and 15 are adhered to the inner surfaces of side wall portions 16 and 17, respectively, to support panel 13 at or near to the lower edge of the windows 21 and 22. The undersides of panels 10 and 11 are adhered together to form the handle of the box and the undersides of flaps 38 are adhered to the upper surfaces of respective flaps 36. The apertures 23 in the panels 10 and 11 are aligned enabling the completed box to be suspended, for example, from a display stand.
Wing portions 24 are folded upwardly, after insertion of an object to be displayed in the box, so that the upper surfaces of flaps 26 make contact with the undersides of the upper wall portions 18 and l9j the wing portions forming upstanding internal walls of the box arranged in generally parallel spaced relationship to adjacent ends of the box to support the object behind the windows 21 and 22. The wing portions 24 and flaps 26 could, however, be omitted altogether.
Flaps 28, 29 and joined flaps 36 and 38 are then folded into the ends of the box and the ends are closed by wing portions 25 and flaps 27.
The box described above is relatively easy to fabricate and can contain an object such as for example a toy or model vehicle in a convenient manner for display. The handle is symmetrically arranged with respect to opposite side walls of the box and both windows extend into the top of the box so that the box can be suspended from a display stand either way round.
The box described above is given by way of example only and various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims. For example, one or both windows could be omitted.
