Abstract
1510962 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines W D M Ltd 18 July 1975 [18 July 1974] 31864/74 Heading F1F Vacuum-pumping apparatus has a casing 10 with least one unit 16 extending between end closures 18, 20 and containing a pair of pump units 12,14 which may be of the sliding-vane type (as shown), the power-input shafts 44 of said units being mutually parallel and connected to a common drive-shaft 50 by way of gears 54, 56. The shafts 44 may have diametral ribs 46 and slots 48 so that with the aid of loose coupling elements, or "dogs", 60 they can be connected without exact axial alignment to the gears 56 and the pump unit(s) in the additional casing unit(s) 16, if provided. The pump units may have a common end-plate 36 attached to the unit 16 and may have inlet and outlet ports 72, 70 connected in series by a conduit 74 and controlled by a non-return valve 78. Alternatively, the ports 72 are connected separately to the enclosure(s) to be evacuated. The casing may be charged wtih oil to a level 92. Gas-ballasting . may be effected through oil inlet passages 94.
