Abstract
1423775 Railway track JAPANESE NATIONAL RAILWAYS 7 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6068/73 Heading E1G In a railway track structure closely-spaced sleeper panels 2 of steel or reinforced (e.g. prestressed) concrete are supported on bottom ballast 3 by a layer 6 of a quick-hardening material-e.g. asphalt/synthetic resin-and are surrounded by top ballast 33 covered with a waterproof layer 4 of quick-setting material such as cut-back asphalt. The material 6, which may be injected hot through sleeper holes 25, penetrates partly into the bottom ballast 3 and preferably also the top ballast 33 to bind some of the ballast together, and may also be spread around the sleepers. The sleepers comprise closely spaced slabs or inverted-channel panels and may be in the form either (as shown) of short longitudinal pot sleepers, with or without tie bars 23, or (Fig. 2a, not shown) of cross sleepers each having a single fastening (7) for each rail (1). The waterproof layer 4 slopes outwardly to drainage channels 5 provided with side-wall apertures 51. The bottom ballast 3 may comprise part of the existing ballast of an old railway track, the other part having been removed. The structure is made by (a) rolling the bottom ballast 3 possibly with a superposed small-stone layer 32; (b) placing at least one sleeper on the rolled ballast; (c) spreading and rolling top ballast 33 around the sleeper; (d) lifting the sleeper e.g. by jacks-a predetermined amount and adjusting it to a desired position; (e) injecting hot material for layer 6 - e.g. through holes 25; (f) allowing partial cooling of the layer 6; (g) removing the sleeper -lifting means; (h) coating the top ballast 33 with waterproof layer 4. The sleepers may be coated with a lime release agent allowing subsequent readjustment of track level by injecting further material 6. Fine adjustment may be effected by using adjustable fastenings 7.
