Abstract

1419941 Change-speed and reverse gear; clutch-brake combinations QUICK-ROTAN BECKER & NOTZ KG 9 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 20642/74 Headings F2D and F2L A spindle 8, e.g. of a sewing machine for unpicking a seam, is driven by an electric motor 1 at high speed directly through a splined clutch plate 11, and at low speed, prior to a positioning stop, by a drive comprising a belt 21 at either one end of the motor, a friction or gear drive 29, 30 at the other end, and a connecting countershaft 25 therebetween, either the belt or the friction drive being disengageable. As shown the low speed drive reverses the direction of rotation of the output shaft, but rotation in the same direction is obtained in Fig. 2, not shown, by including an idler (42) in the friction drive. The countershaft 25 is carried in bearings 26, 27 in a tube 28, which is pivoted about a transverse pin 32 by energizing a solenoid 39 to engage the friction wheels 29, 30, in opposition to belt tension. Alternatively the belt drive 21 itself may be engageable and disengageable by pivoting a jockey tensioning pulley into contact with its idle run. The high speed clutch plate 11 is engaged with a motor flywheel 2 by energizing a stationary magnet winding 17, a splined brake plate 18 being similarly engageable with a stationary brake plate 6 by a winding 18. The positioning control may be as described in Specifications 956,720, 1,274,954 and 1,339,468.
