Abstract

1416564 Treating human hair WELLA AG 14 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 12328/73 Heading D1P Human hair is permanently deformed by allowing a forming agent containing a water soluble mercapto carboxylic acid salt and a salt of glyoxylic acid to act on the hair, after which the hair is fixed by treatment with a fixing agent containing hydrogen peroxide or a compound of addition thereof, and without intermediate rinsing of the hair. 'The mercapto carboxylic acid salt used is preferably a water-soluble salt of thioglycolic acid or thiolactic acid. A salt of ascorbic acid may be added to the glyoxylic acid salt. The salts of glyoxylic acid and optionally ascorbic acid may be present in a total concentration of from 2 to 4% by weight based on the total weight of the agent. For the permanent waving of hair, the hair may be first moistened with a part of the forming agent and then wound on to permanent waving curlers, further moistened with the remainder of the forming agent and optionally covered with a hood-like plastic cloth. After an action time of 10-20 minutes, the curled hair is thoroughly moistened with part of the fixing agent which is left to act for 2-3 minutes. Then, after removing the hair from the curlers the remaining fixing agent is applied and left to act for a further one to three minutes. Finally the hair is rinsed with water and after-treated to produce the hair style. Permanent straightening of crinkly hair may be effected by applying the forming agent in a thickened formulation and allowing it to act for 10-20 minutes while combing the hair repeatedly. The hair is then treated for 3-7 minutes with a thickened formulation of the fixing agent, after which the hair is rinsed in water and after-treated to produce the hair style. Forming and fixing agents are exemplified which, on admixture, produce a temperature rise of up to 50‹C. Further heat may be supplied during the initial treatment of the hair e.g. by a hair dryer.
