Abstract
1405428 Polishing lens surfaces AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 13 Nov 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 52217/72 Heading C1M An optical quality surface on a lens is produced by preparing a lens having an unfinished surface, and heating the said surface with a high frequency plasma torch for a time sufficient to melt a thin, substantially uniform section of glass over the unfinished surface without inducing distortion in the body of the lens. The lens may be annealed while subsequently cooling. Preferably the lens is preheated, and conveyed past the plasma torch. Preferably the melted section is of depth 10-100 Á. The lens preferably is rotated during the heating which may be for, e.g. 5-15 seconds. Typically the plasma torch has a flame temperature of at least 5000‹ C., an emission wavelength at substantially 290 nm, and a gas velocity of approx. 30 feet per second. The gas, which may be air, argon, nitrogen or a nitrogen/oxygen mixture, is supplied to torch chamber 13 from supply 15 through valve 16 and tubing 17. High frequency generator 10 is connected between A.C. input 11 and induction coil 12.
