Abstract
1499750 Production of methane containing gases METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 30 June 1975 [9 July 1974] 27605/75 Heading C5E In a process for the production of a methane containing gas for use as a natural gas substitute, a primary gas which has been produced by pressure gasification of coal, tar, or heavy residual oil is purified to remove catalyst poisons and CO 2 and is adjusted to a water vapour : CO 2 ratio of 0À55-1:1, before being passed at an entry temperature of 300-500‹ C. through a reaction zone containing a methanation catalyst which comprises 20-60% by weight nickel on a water resistant support, the temperature at which the gas enters the reaction zone being adjusted so that the gases leaving the zone are below 600‹ C., these gases then being supplied to a final methanation stage. A partial stream of the product gas may be recycled, being mixed with the scrubbed primary gas in a volume ratio of 2:1 to 6:1.
