1467219 Methane production D L BANQUY 4 Aug 1975 [13 Aug 1974] 32474/75 Heading C5E A process for the production of a high Btu methane rich gas from a carbonaceous or hydrocarbonaceous feedstock comprises (a) generating a gaseous effluent having a substantial CO content from the feedstock and purifying it to remove impurities such as residual carbon and sulphur compounds, (b) dividing the resulting gaseous effluent into a plurality of fractions, (c) subjecting a first fraction to methanation, (d) subjecting a second fraction to shift conversion followed by CO 2 removal, (e) mixing the resulting effluents from steps (c) and (d) and methanating the mixture, and (f) separating any excess nitrogen present from the product. The feedstock may be fossil fuels such as coal, waste polymeric materials, shale oil, naphtha or heavier hydrocarbon feedstocks or gas oil, and the gasification is performed in the presence of either oxygen enriched air or pure oxygen. Either a catalytic or non-catalytic process may be employed, and if the former the catalyst bed may be fixed or fluidized. The purification of the gaseous effluent uses conventional scrubbing methods with NaOH, KOH or diethylamine, the solvent being regenerated and recycled. The methanation of the first purified fraction is performed with recycling of part of the products, and steam may be mixed with the feed gas to the methanation so as to achieve shift conversion of part of the CO content of the gas. The shift conversion of the second fraction is preceded by humidification of the feed gas to ensure a sufficient amount of steam for the conversion. A combination of both high and low temperature conversion stages may be involved. The gaseous product is cooled before being subjected to CO 2 removal by scrubbing with a solvent such as an amine compound, K 2 CO 3 , methanol. The combined products from the first methanation and shift conversion stages are subjected to a two stage methanation involving a first high temperature reaction and a second lower temperature reaction, products being recycled from the lower temperature reactor to the higher temperature reactor. After drying, the products from this methanation are subjected to cryogenic separation to remove nitrogen.
