Abstract
1497171 Purifying carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixtures TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 Oct 1975 [23 Dec 1974(2)] 44762/75 Heading C5E A gaseous mixture comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide is produced by the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous fuel with a freeoxygen-containing gas in a free-flow non-catalytic synthesis gas generator at 1300-1500 F. and 1-300 atmospheres in the presence of a temperature moderator (e.g. steam) and is cooled and scrubbed to produce a carbon-water dispersion and a product gas; the carbon-water dispersion is contacted with a liquid organic extractant to produce a stream of carbon-extractant dispersion and a stream of clarified water, the carbonextractant dispersion is centrifuged to produce a thick stream containing 1-10 wt. per cent carbon and a thin stream containing 0À02-1 wt. per cent carbon, the thick stream is passed into a fractional distillation zone in admixture with fresh heavy liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a light liquid fraction and a pumpable carbon slurry are removed from the distillation zone, and either or both of the thin centrifuge stream and the light liquid fraction are used as all or a portion of the liquid organic extractant. The liquid organic extractant can be a byproduct mixture from the oxo or oxoyl process for the catalylic production of aldehydes or alcohols from the product gas or a C 5 -C 16 hydrocarbon fuel boiling within the range 100-500 F. and can be used in an amount of 10-200 times the weight of particulate carbon in the aqueous dispersion. The clarified water stream can be recycled to the scrubbing zone and the pumpable carbon slurry from the distillation can be used as the hydrocarbonaceous fuel to be partially oxidized. The hydrocarbonaceous fuel can be a petroleum distillate or residue, a coal tar, shale or tar sand oil, a slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel in water or hydrocarbon or a by-product mixture from the oxo or oxoyl process.
