Abstract

1489092 Opposed piston IC engines; reciprocating compressors ENERGIAGAZDALKODASI INTEZET 2 Dec 1974 52092/74 Headings F1B and F1N [Also in Division F2] A reciprocating free-piston internal combustion engine comprises two pairs of opposed cylinders 48, 50, the pistons 40, 42 in each pair being yieldingly connected by means 60, 62 to a common piston rod 58 drivingly connected to a power output shaft 32 normal to the cylinder axis 36 via a transmission for converting the reciprocating motion into uni-directional rotation of shaft 32. In the arrangement shown, the transmission comprises a piston rod rack 58a engaging a toothed annulus 56 having a cammed inner surface 56a between which and shaft 32 are disposed rollers 106 to form a freewheel. Thus rightwards movement of pistonrod 58 causes the transmission to lock to apply a clockwise driving torque to shaft 32 whereas a freewheeling action occurs on the leftwards return stroke of the rod. The engine shown is of twostroke internal combustion type and includes opposed charging air pistons 84, 86 yieldingly connected to a common piston-rod 92 by diaphragms 94, 96. Piston-rod 92 engages toothed annulus 56 so that its reciprocating movement is maintained in opposite phase to that of piston-rod 58. Fuel is injected into the cylinders 48, 50 by pumps 64, 66 operated by levers 68, 70 having rollers 72, 74 engaging a piston-rod cam surface 58b. The second pair of opposed power pistons Fig. 2 (not shown) is disposed in further cylinders alongside the first pair, the respective piston rod 58, (108) engaging a common pinion 110 so as to maintain the desired opposite phase relationship. The additional pistonrod (108) also engages output shaft 32 via a free wheel transmission. In a modification Fig. 5 (not shown) the compression ratio of the engine can be manually or automatically varied by a screw and nut device (236, 238, 240) which can displace both the charging and power cylinders inwards or outwards relative to output shaft 32. In a modified four-stroke engine Figs. 3,4 (not shown) the rack and pinion part of the power transmission from each piston-rod is replaced by a pair of steel bands (130, 132) each fixed at one end to an extremity of the piston rod and at the other end to the outer annulus (56) of the free-wheel. A similar arrangement of bands (146, 148) is employed for the synchronizing connection between the two power piston-rods (58, 108).
