Abstract

1473275 Seaming NATIONAL CAN CORP 26 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 12674/75 Heading B3J [Also in Division B8] The residual metal of a generally U-shaped weakening line 18 defining a tear-strip 20 in an easy-open metal container end increases in thickness from the base of the U towards the ends. The residual thickness is 0À002-0À003 inch over the weakening line segment L, 0À003-0À004 over the segments L<SP>1</SP> to the intersection with the plane P, and then increases in steps along the segments L<SP>2</SP> to terminate in the range of 0À004 to 0À006 inch. The tear strip has a tear-initiating end portion 22 of greater width than the tear strip width at a plane P passing through an integral rivet 26 for securement of a tab 30, Fig. 1 (not shown), to prevent outwards movement of the end portion after it has been initially-ruptured and depressed into the container. The easy-opening end is of the type in which the tab depresses the strip into the container and then engages the edges of the opening formed to retain the strip within the container, Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown).
