Abstract
1361784 Push-in closures for sheet-metal containers BROKEN HILL PTY CO Ltd 15 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 43031/71 Headings B8C and B8D [Also in Division B3] An easy-opening closure in a container made from sheet metal comprises an opening 16 formed by severing a part, or whole, portion of the sheet metal and a closure member 12 formed from, or comprising, the severed portion and which is larger than the opening 16, the closure member 12 having a part of a free edge portion 19 thereof in contact with, or in close proximity to, said free edge 17 defining the opening. If required, the edge of the opening is sealed interiorly by a sealant S. As shown, a can end 10 has two cut-out closure members 12 each of which remains connected thereto by a narrow hinge portion 14 and is resiliently biased upwardly towards the opening, the area of the closure member 12 being larger than that of the opening. The sealant S is made for instance of any suitable polymer such as P.V.C.; it may, however, be provided by the lacquer commonly applied to the interior surfaces of the container. A push-in closure is formed by first forming an upward bulge 20 and severing it at a shoulder 22 to define the opening 16 and the hinge portion 14, partially flattening the truncated portion around the opening 16 to reduce the size of the latter, turning the free edge of the opening downwardly, partially flattening the closure member 12 to increase its size, and finally turning the free edge of the member 12 upwardly. Sealant S is then applied. The desired overlap "x" may be obtained in other ways, for example the bulge may be of annular shape or, the bulge, or part of it, may be deformed downwardly. Alternatively, the bulge may have a flat surface, Figs. 13-17 (not shown), in which case the overlap is provided solely by the partial flattening of the truncated bulge around the opening 16. If the member 12 is wholly severed from the container a hinge portion, such as 14, may be provided by a strong adhesive material.
